Cowboys Hockey

1984 - The Seafair Senior Men's Hockey League

By 1984, some of the older players were feeling their age. (They had no idea!) The Sea Island Rec League was getting better and faster and younger, so it seemed. At that time the senior member of the team were already looking toward an age restricted league, by the was a brand new league being formed called the Seafair Senior Men's Hockey League. Turns out there was nothing really all that senior about it, but it sounded good, so the Cowboys left the Sea Island League for the SSMHL.

Eventually a few other teams followed and the Sea Island League soon folded.

The Cowboys would enjoy many years of hockey in the Seafair League at Seafair Arena under the care of the very capable and much loved Yates brothers. Seafair arena boosted the best ice surface in the lower mainland and the very popular lounge overlooking the arena. The league grew in popularily soon hosting 25 teams. A split to 3 divisions allowed the Cowboys to stay together and age as a team.

Many a good time was had on the ice, in the dressing room and upstairs it the bar where Don and later Rob Yates treated us very well. It was a home away from home and when the bartender wanted to go home, he did asking us to make sure we closed the door behind us.

It was a sad day when the doors closed forever on that fine establishment.
