Cowboys Hockey

2018-2019: 40 Years in the Making!

Who knew 40 years ago that the Cowboys would still be together playing hockey like nothing had changed... well that's not exactly true - especially if you are one of the guys on the older team. Bodies have aged, legs have slowed and reflexes aren't what they used to be, but the game is still the same and in the dressing room the guys still talk like they're still in their thirties.

In the younger Richmond Industrial Hockey League, the Cowboys are still in their thirties and continuing the traditions set out by their fathers, uncles and elders.

Over the years there have been up to 4 different teams playing for the Richmond Cowboys Hockey Club, including a pretty good female team.

A lot has happened over the decades, plenty of celebrations of many kinds, from the barn parties of early years to ruckus fund raisers, sorted road trips, golf tournaments, Father-Child games and the infamous Old Boot Challenge. In the summer after our 40th season we invited all Cowboys, past present and future to join with us in the party that began two score years ago.

On August 10, 2019, close to 150 people showed up to the Zellweger farm to celebrate. It was an all day affair that included blow up castles, slap shot speed testing games and whatever other fun a kid or adult could have on a farm. The potato barn was cleaned out and a "History Barn" was set up, including video and a Walk of History that stretched 40 years along the length of the barn. Jenny Molema provided an awesome steak barbeque dinner, Rob Wilson set up his booming DJ system and kept the dance floor hopping and we took time to and honour the leaders and best of all, reminisce with old friends about all that made this hockey community so great.

If you missed it, you are sorry.

Professional photographer and former goaltender, Alan Hay documented the event and published a pictorial memoire of the event.
