The players, later to form the Richmond Cowboys, first assembled a team to compete in The Spring Tournament at Burnaby 4-Rinks (now 8 Rinks) in 1979.   Donning jerseys donated by Seafair Arena, the motley crew gathered together by Doug Collins were aptly named Richmond Rookies. Winning only one game in three on the weekend, the players were defeated, but not disheartened.

When the coming regular hockey season arrived in September, Captain Ron May called on a few others to join in.  With the help of "The Rookies" coach Ron Fontaine (player for Air Canada's hockey team at the same time), the boys joined the Sea Island Recreational Hockey League.  New jerseys were ordered, the Cowboy hats came out and the Richmond Cowboys Hockey Club was born.  Seafair Arena, at the end of Francis Road in Richmond, BC would become home for years to come.
