Doug Collins 1997-1998

A chance meeting between Hap May and Doug Collins, back in 1978 laid the foundation for the forming of the Richmond Cowboys Hockey Club. Doug, some friends, Hap and his 5 brothers iced a team in a Spring 1979 tournament that later resulted in the "Cowboys" entering the Sea Island Recreational Hockey League that fall.

Doug is one of 5 'Cowboys' (Hap May, Glen May, Dave Fontaine, Ross Hillman) still playing who suited up for the 1st Cowboy game. No other player has played more games than Doug, and coupled with his infamous "long shifts", no one is ever likely to see more ice-time either!

Steadfast in his staunch loyalty to the Cowboys for over 20 years, #8 is the core and inspiration to scores of players who have worn the black and gold. Doug, above all others, has been unswerving and self-sacrificing in his dedication to the team and continues to provide strong and influential leadership both on and off the ice.

Doug became Team manager in 1989 and has since organized the Cowboys Bi-annual Meat Sale, initiated the annual Old Boot Game, created the Father & Child Game, the 'Cowboy of the Year' award, the Cowboy Christmas Charity donation and the Cowboy website. Don't applaud yet though, Doug has still never played goal for the Cowboys.

Doug Collins is the Richmond Cowboys. A mere 5 hours after the birth of his 2nd Child and to the amazement of his team mates, there was Doug in the dressing room, suiting up for a game telling the guys, "Karen and the baby are fine, we have a game to win". Doug Collins is the "Heart" of the Richmond Cowboys Hockey Club.
