Cowboys Hockey

1989-90 - Ten Years After

If Cowboy Tuesday was the party of the decade, the "Ten Years After" party would cover the next. Ten years in the game was as good a reason to have a party as any. But it was John Savage that pointed out some years later that the decade celebration took place a year too late! Anybody born in 1979 (the year the Cowboys began) would have turned 10 years old in 1989, right? So it stood to reason to a dumb hockey player that 79-89 would be ten years of hockey, but (count it on your fingers) it is actually 11 seasons of hockey. Individuals have to live a full year to become one year ago, but a hockey season counts as one on the very first game. It wasn't until our 15 years celebration (which was actually 16 years) that we figured this out! None of the 200 plus people at the Ten Year After party gathered at Randy May's barn took any notice.

What many may not remember is the contest that took place prior to the party. The entire first year team was reunited to challenge the "rookie" members of the team. This would be the precursor the the fabled "Old Boot" game, a similar challenge fought for the prize of a dirty old boot, , that later emerge from the cranberry farms in Richmond, steeped in mystery and rumour. The game ended in a tie with the score to be settled later, and for many years to come.
