Cowboys Hockey

"Heart, Strength and Dedication -
A Leader, a Competitor, a Gentleman"

Rick May
Doug Collins 2013-2014

It is indeed an honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to recognize "Mr. Cowboy" Doug Collins as "Cowboy of the Year" for the 2013-14 season. As is his character, he tried his best to decline this award, making the case that it should not be awarded twice to the same person. The committee however, was not to be denied its decision and finally won out!

Doug was chosen "Cowboy of the Year" the first time for the 1997-98 season. At that time his dedication to the team for over 20 years was well documented as can be seen below. That dedication has never wavered and continues today, over 15 years later. Doug has now led the team as manager since 1989, over 26 years.

Since the beginnings of the Cowboys Hockey Club in 1978, Doug has been an unrelenting force supporting and leading both on and off the ice. I must mention Karen (his wife) at this point, as I am sure that she has made many sacrifices along the way in support of Doug and ultimately, the Cowboys team. Thanks from the team Karen.

From the warm-up skate until the clock runs down at the end of every game, Doug can be seen working hard. One evening this past year in the dressing room before a game, I mentioned to him that he looked a little tired. He replied that he had worked a long day in the Whistler Village area and had just driven down for the game... only to return later that same night following the game!

His leadership is an inspiration to all team members as demonstrated not only by his hockey skills but also by the hours spent organizing the many Cowboys functions and events.

Doug has more than earned the privilege of receiving this award for the second time.
